Student use of smart devices during the school day

Education law section 2803 bans the use of smart devices by students during the school day.

As part of a Distraction Free Schools Initiative undertaken by Governor Hochul, student use of smart devices during school hours will be prohibited beginning in September. In compliance with a new addition to education law (Ed Law section 2803) all New York schools must ban student use of smart devices during the school day. All students are discouraged from bringing smart devices to school and must store them securely throughout the school day if they do. Further details will be provided before the start of the 2025-26 school year on the district website and in the August summer mailing. Our “frequently asked questions” document linked below will be updated periodically as new details become available.
