April 3, 2020

Dear Middle Country Community,

We are ending our third week of closure, our third week of social distancing. As I’m sure you’ve been feeling, it has been a disconcerting, uneasy time but it has also been a time that has highlighted our strong, supportive community’s care for our children and each other.

Our Grab and Go breakfast and lunch meal program, which is available to every child in Middle Country, has been busy.  As of today, almost 30,000 meals have been provided!  We are also hosting a SCOPE Childcare program.  Please visit for more information on these programs.  As a reminder, both programs will be in operation next week, and every weekday that schools are closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Information is changing very quickly.  Governor Cuomo, for example, recently required schools to continue instruction during the time periods that most schools in our state had designated as spring break.  I’ve heard from a number of you that you and your children want and need a break; I’ve heard from others that you want even more school work posted.  We will continue instruction as it is currently for the next week and a half; teachers will continue to be available.  However, please make sure to take the breaks that you and your children need…take the time you need to relax and ready yourselves for the weeks ahead.

The Governor’s executive order closing schools for the second two-week period expires April 14th; if he extends the closure further, we will fully implement distance learning on April 15th.  We have been told that, within days, we should have information from the State Education Department on what the current school closures mean right now and what additional closures might mean going forward, in terms of Regents exams and graduation pathways and requirements.  As soon as I have any new information, it will be posted on

Finally, I want to thank you for your patience.  We are doing the best we can to provide you with clear, current information – but sometimes situations change, additional clarifications are needed or adjustments need to be made.  Please be assured we are trying, the best we can, to ease pressures and worries.  Please continue to let me know when something isn’t clear or when something doesn’t make sense.

Please continue to take care of yourselves and your families.  We will make it through these times because, after all – we are Middle Country – strong and proud!

Roberta A. Gerold, Ed.D.
