September 15, 2020

Dear Families,

Today, September 15, 2020, the Middle Country School District was notified that a staff member and a student at Newfield High School, have tested positive for COVID-19.  The two cases are separate; there does not appear to have been any contact between these two individuals.  The staff member was last in the building on September 10th; September 11th was the last date that the student was in the school.

We share this information with you as part of our ongoing efforts to keep our community informed of any issues of concern.  Please know, however, that we must also be careful to respect the laws relating to the privacy of our students and staff so we cannot provide any more details or comments.

In accordance with our re-opening plan, we have been in contact with the Suffolk County Department of Health Services.  We are assisting the Department of Health in contact tracing efforts.  The Department of Health will notify those who are identified as being a close contact and will issue quarantine orders as applicable.

As always, the health and safety of our students and staff is our top priority.  Therefore, the staff member, the student and any individuals who are directed to quarantine will only be allowed to return to Newfield High School when released to do so by the Suffolk County Department of Health.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact either of us.

Roberta A. Gerold, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
